St. Katharine Drexel Parish Penny Drive
By Bev Johnson

Put your hands together for our preschool and elementary children of our parish of St. Katharine Drexel Parish! They have done a fantastic job of raising money through our penny drive! They have raised over $600.00 so far and are continuing to bring change every weekend.

October was the start of the children’s activities for our building campaign. During a children’s liturgy, the children put on hard hats and constructed a church. This church has been placed in the back of they gym every weekend at O’Gorman Junior High to help remind the children and us parents of this great gift of a church we are building for God.

The Trunk-or-Treat activity was a huge success with over 30 vehicles decorated for our young children to receive treats. There were games and activities for the children in the gym along with great food and fellowship.

Also at Thrunk-or-Treat, we started our penny drive for the preschool and elementary children. They were able to decorate bottles at the Trunk or Treat for their penny drive.  The children were asked to try to raise their height in pennies.  Our children went right to their piggy banks and counted out enough change to equal their height. I’m sure there were a lot of other children that did the same.

A wheelbarrow has been placed at the back of the gym since we started our penny drive. Children have dropped off their change in their decorated bottles and have continued to bring change every weekend. The wheelbarrow will remain out every weekend until our new church is complete.

What should we do with the money our children have raised? Should it be used to help buy stained glass windows for the church, toys and books for our children’s nursery?  We have had lots of children and parents ask what the money will be used for. That is why we need to hear from you. We want to make this a special gift to the church that the children can be proud of their contribution.  We would love suggestions for a gift that would be something the children can say "I was a part of this!" and be proud of it.
