Children’s Choir
By Bev Johnson

I was in second grade when I started singing in the Children’s Choir at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. At first, my decision to join the choir was to escape my dad’s watchful eye in the pew, but after joining I realized that I loved to sing. I didn’t understand it then but now, as an adult, I can see (and feel) how the Holy Spirit embraces, strengthens and moves through the gift of singing.

Even as a small girl in second grade, the opportunity to sing in the choir made an impact on my life. Singing with the other kids in the choir was great but singing with the adult choir was just “the coolest thing ever.” The choir director wouldn’t tell us if we were singing with the choir on Sunday. We had to wait until we got to church to see if the sign was posted… “Children and Adult Choir Today.” I lived to see that sign! Even at a young age, I felt it was a privilege to sing with the adult choir!

Our daughters, Jessica, Stacy and Anna, sing in the choir. Rather than drop them off for their choir practice, I enjoy watching the kids as their eyes light up when they sing favorite songs and how each child’s face reflects the confidence, strength and love they have learned through the gift of music. As a parent, we are proud to see our children participating in a church activity but to see a child grow by using a God given talent in the choir brings back memories of a small girl skipping up the steps of the church to see if the sign was posted… “Children and Adult Choir Today”.
